Practicing peace

Peace is a valuable commodity in the home. So, when I returned to my desk after almost three months away, I was looking forward to finding a little peace. But as I write, it's August already and peace still seems a bit elusive.

As Jesus made His way into the world, the angels broadcast it from the skies: "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests!" First the glory goes to God. Then peace comes to those on whom God's favor rests.

That's what so easy to forget in the midst of the daily chaos. Peace and thankfulness—giving glory to God—go hand in hand. It's too easy to complain, to get stressed, to give in to exasperation.

The angels' proclamation wasn't only valid 2,000 years ago. And, it's not only for Christmas. God's favor rests on us year-round. We need to take hold of that promise, and actively practice peace.

So when your children are hollering,  be thankful they are healthy. When you struggle through the morning, be thankful you have a home, food to eat and transportation. When you get to work,  be thankful you have a job, and co-workers you enjoy being with.

The second verse of a Christmas song sums it up well. "Let peace begin with me; Let this be the moment now. With every step I take; Let this be my solemn vow. To take each moment; And live each moment; With peace eternally. Let there be peace on earth"; And let it begin with me."
